چکیده

Abstract. Nitrous oxide (N2O) is one of the important greenhouse gases. N2O emissions from anthropogenic sources are approximately 7-8 million tones N/yr worldwide and 70% of these emissions are caused by crop and animal production. In this study, direct N2O production from dairy cattle (enteric fermentation) and feces/urine temporarily stored in two freestall dairy barns were measured with 1) photoacoustic infra-red gas analyzer Ι (analyzer Ι, Innova 1412), 2) infrared gas analyzer ΙΙ (analyzer ΙΙ: Teledyne API 320E), 3) GC-ECD (gas chromatography-electron capture detector),and 4) GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy). N2O concentrations in the exhaust air from the two barns ranged from 310 ppb to 371 ppb. No significant difference was found between GC-ECD and GC-MS N2O results. Analyzer ΙΙ’s response was not sensitive enough for the near ambient N2O concentrations found from the two dairy barns. Significant differences were found between GC-ECD and analyzer Ι N2O measurements. These differences may be caused due to interferences between N2O and CO2 and water vapor.

Odor and Odorous Chemical Emissions from Animal Buildings: Part 2- Odor Emissions

This study was an add-on project to the National Air Emissions Monitoring Study (NAEMS) and focused on comprehensive measurement of odor emissions. Odor emissions from two animal species (dairy and swine) from four sites with nine barns/rooms (two dairy barns in Wisconsin, two dairy barns and two swine rooms in Indiana, and three swine barns in Iowa) during four cycles (13-week periods) were me...

Methodological Comparison between a Novel Automatic Sampling System for Gas Chromatography versus Photoacoustic Spectroscopy for Measuring Greenhouse Gas Emissions under Field Conditions

Trace gases such as nitrous oxide (N2O), methane (CH4), and carbon dioxide (CO2) are climate-related gases, and their emissions from agricultural livestock barns are not negligible. Conventional measurement systems in the field (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR); photoacoustic system (PAS)) are not sufficiently sensitive to N2O. Laser-based measurement systems are highly accurate, ...

Potential use of milk urea nitrogen to abate atmospheric nitrogen emissions from wisconsin dairy farms.

Urinary urea N (UUN) is the principal nitrogen (N) source controlling emissions of ammonia (NH) and nitrous oxide (NO) from dairy manure. The objectives of this study were (i) to study the integrative nature of dietary crude protein (CP) management, secretion of milk urea N (MUN), excretion of UUN, and N emissions from dairy production systems; (ii) to evaluate how associative changes in dietar...

Short communication: Evaluation of milk urea nitrogen as a management tool to reduce ammonia emissions from dairy farms.

The purpose of this study was to compile and evaluate relationships between feed nitrogen (N) intake, milk urea N (MUN), urinary urea N (UUN), and ammonia (NH(3)) emissions from dairy farms to aid policy development. Regression relationships between MUN, UUN, and NH(3) emissions were compiled from studies conducted in Wisconsin, California, and the Netherlands. Relative reductions in NH(3) emis...

The contribution of manure and fertilizer nitrogen to atmospheric nitrous oxide since 1860

Atmospheric nitrous oxide concentrations have been increasing since the industrial revolution and currently account for 6% of total anthropogenic radiative forcing. Microbial production in soils is the dominant nitrous oxide source; this has increased with increasing use of nitrogen fertilizers. However, fertilizer use alone cannot account for the historical trends of atmospheric concentrations...
